Congress Passes Antibiotic Data Collection Legislation

At the end of July, Congress added an amendment to the Animal Drug User Fee Act that for the first time requires the FDA to collect data on the use of antibiotics in animal settings.

An estimated 70 percent of all antibiotics used in the US are regularly added to the feed of livestock and poultry that are not sick.

While this practice of needless antibiotic use in livestock does not directly effect horses, it does effect horse owners and our dogs and cats, since livestock for food (consumed by humans and our pets) is often heavily medicated with antibiotics.
